Pooled analysis of validations studies showed c-statistics of 0.54 (95% CI = 0.52-0.57) and 0.67 (95% CI = 0.62-0.71) for short and long term TIMI validation studies, and 0.83 (95% CI = 0.79-9.87) and 0.80 (95% CI = 0.74-0.89) for short and long term GRACE studies. For NSTEMI/UA, 18 derivation studies with 56,560 patients and 18 validation cohorts with 56,673 patients were included. Pooled analysis of GRACE scores, both at short (0.82 0.80-0.89 I.C 95%) and long term follow up (0.84 0.82-0.87 I.C 95%) showed the best performance, with similar results to Simple Risk Index (SRI) derivation cohorts at short term. 7 derivation studies with 25,525 ACS patients and 15 validation studies including 257,654 people were formally appraised. The c-statistics of validation studies were pooled when appropriate with random-effect methods. They were divided into ACS studies (evaluating Unstable Angina UA, Non ST Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction NSTEMI, and ST Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction STEMI), UA/NSTEMI studies or STEMI studies. PubMed was systematically searched for ACS risk score studies. Risk scores have become the cornerstone in clinical and interventional decision making. Acute coronary syndromes (ACS) represent a difficult challenge for physicians.

The car would lurch when idling at a stop light, even with my foot barely on the brake. It also made the noise when I accelerated and then gradually it was noisy no matter which direction I turned. At first it was mainly when I turned to the left. At 25%, the car started making an awful noise. Frequently checked the "oil life" percentage. Purchased Equinox at the end of June with 85,557 miles. Operator suggested we take it in to the dealers as part of an oil consumption recall he heard about, within 200 miles we took it into a dealership for the test to be performed and they refused to do it due to a rear main seal leak that no one mentioned earlier or at the oil change place. Back on oil was changed as part of routine at a service station. One of the most common points of confusion with quotes is when to use single versus double quotation marks. Many historians believe that Richard the Lionheart was gay, but that evidence has been removed from historical records. If the nickname is how a famous person is most commonly recognized, as with many historical figures, then no quotes are necessary. The standard is to place the quoted nickname between the first name and the surname, although that’s not necessarily a rule.ĭwayne “The Rock” Johnson can’t escape his origins as a wrestler. Last, if you are writing a person’s nickname together with their given name, set the nickname apart with quotation marks so the reader knows it’s not part of their formal name. 6ĭifferentiate a nickname from a given name The “p” in “pterodactyl” is actually silent. Depending on the styling format, some writers alternatively use italics, without quotation marks, for this purpose (like us on the Grammarly blog). If you want to discuss a word, phrase, or letter in writing without using its intended meaning, set it apart with quotation marks. My “pet” is really just a stray cat that comes by once a day. Scare quotes in writing are the origin of the air quotes gesture in in-person speech. They also require the proper context so the reader understands why the writer doubts or is qualifying the word’s usage. Scare quotes generally appear as quotation marks around a single word or sometimes a phrase. They are commonly used to show irony, sarcasm, or how something is “popularly termed.” They can have the same meaning as the phrase so-called, including suspicious insinuation. Scare quotes are used to show that the writer doubts the validity of a word. Set apart a word to show irony, sarcasm, or skepticism (scare quotes) Written by Sylvia Plath, “Tulips” is a sad poem with a happy title. You can see a complete list of when to use quotation marks for titles and when to use italics in our guide “When to Use Quotation Marks in Titles. Titles of long-form works, like books, films, and stage plays, use italics instead. Typically, the titles of short-form works like poems, short stories, and songs use quotation marks. Certain types of works-but not all-use quotation marks around their titles so the reader knows they’re a reference. 3Īside from quotes and speech, English also uses quotation marks for the titles of works. He urgently asked the nurse where the emergency room was. However, if you’re paraphrasing what someone said, you don’t need quotation marks. “Where is the emergency room?” he asked the nurse urgently. In fiction, they’re used for writing dialogue or whenever a character says something out loud. In nonfiction, they’re commonly used to transcribe what a person said, as with an interview or eyewitness account. Quotation marks are used to represent speech in written text. Stephen Hawking warned that the Higgs boson could potentially lead to “catastrophic vacuum decay” in the universe, caused by “a bubble of the true vacuum expanding at the speed of light.” 2 This is most common in nonfiction writing, when a writer uses a phrase or sentence from a preexisting source, usually to support their thesis. Naturally, there are different types of quotes, but whenever you are copying someone word for word, you need quotation marks. If you’re using the same word, sentence, or phrase as another author, put those words in between quotation marks. One of the most common uses of quotation marks is to indicate a direct quote, a passage that is copied verbatim from another source. So below, we list out the six main uses for quotation marks. It helps to break down rules for quotation marks by their function. “How do we use quotation marks?” the student asked their teacher. The direction a quotation mark faces depends on whether it comes before the quote or after. But, unlike commas, quotation marks can face both directions. Double quotation marks are simply two “commas” next to each other, while single quotation marks use only one comma. Quotation marks, or “quotes” for short, look just like commas, except quotation marks are at the top of a line instead of at the bottom. The quotation marks symbol is a type of punctuation used for setting words and passages apart from the rest of the text. About Git configuration for GitHub Desktop Having defined the distinct differences between ‘postmodernism’ and ‘postmodernity’, I first explore the album’s narrative and consider whether Yorke portrays a postmodernist ideological standpoint on its themes. Using this definition as an initial framework for my investigation, I then begin my analysis of Radiohead’s third album, Ok Computer. I begin by attempting to define the intricate intellectual character of postmodernism, defining its historical origin and initial artistic emergence in the late 20th Century. In this investigation, I define the manifestation of postmodernism in these two albums, analysing their highly contrasting interpretations of the style and critically analysing the negative and positive effects of Radiohead’s embrace of the postmodernist aesthetic. However, these albums also mark the beginning of Radiohead’s embrace of the intellectual aesthetic that defines contemporary culture postmodernism. These two albums represent a distinct boundary point in Radiohead’s career between the derivative, alternative rock style of their formative years and the intellectually complex, experimental and eclectic artistic identity of their latter. Ok Computer and Kid A are the two most significant albums in the discography of Radiohead. McLuhan posits that " artists " are generally among the most adept in society when it comes to recognizing these subliminal environments, and I have attempted elsewhere (Rose, 2009) to illustrate how attuned the members of the British rock group EME_10.1&2_Rose_75-90.indd 75 EME_10.1&2_Rose_75-90.indd 75 " In other words, given the constant flux in how our experience of the world is mediated, we require the ability to map and give shape to the environments our media create, so that we are best able to optimize our interface with them at both the individual and collective levels. It was clear for McLuhan that essential for psychic and social survival in the contemporary age would be the successful navigation of the continuously accelerating bully-blow of technological change, what economist Joseph Schumpeter (1966) characterizes as advanced capitalism's extraordinary powers of " creative destruction. In his groundbreaking book Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, Marshall McLuhan (1964/1994) notes that we will eventually have to recognize education as " civil defense against media fallout " (p. This adaptive response consisted of a vast effort to recreate and reidentify themselves, by way of a recon-figuration of both their artistic and commercial technological extensions, in an exis-tential struggle to maintain an ongoing sense of authenticity. This article explores the response of the British rock group Radiohead to the almost fatal creative paralysis that resulted from the enormous success and critical attention generated by their 1997 landmark recording Ok Computer.
